Since leaving my NHS clinical consultant post in July 2011, I have become a self-employed obstetric academic and expert. As an academic I receive payment for research work (as a researcher-collaborator, member of advisory steering groups, chair of trial steering group, PhD supervision), teaching (lectures, running a special study module, interviewing, facilitator of BSc in Medical Law and Ethics) and examining (KCL and Dublin). I am also paid to work for NICE. I am employed to produce expert reports and medicolegal reports. I receive small fees and royalties from medical writing (<£500 per annum).
